A FAREWELL FROM EMERALD LEATHER COMPANY
After twelve incredible years, the time has come to close this chapter.
Emerald Leather Company officially opened on September 11, 2014, with a simple goal: to preserve quality craftsmanship and give well-loved leather goods a second life. On September 11, 2026, exactly twelve years later, Emerald Leather Company will permanently close its doors.
This was not an easy decision. The leather industry has changed significantly over the years. As the cost of skilled repairs continues to rise, many people understandably choose replacement over restoration. While there will always be those who appreciate the value of preserving a treasured piece, it has become increasingly difficult for a small artisan shop to remain sustainable.
Looking back, I feel nothing but gratitude.
Over the past twelve years, I've had the privilege of meeting wonderful clients, restoring cherished heirlooms, creating one-of-a-kind custom pieces, and working on projects that challenged and inspired me. Every item entrusted to my workshop carried its own story, and it has been an honor to help preserve those stories for another generation.
Perhaps the most meaningful part of this journey is that Emerald Leather Company allowed me to support the American Migraine Foundation in memory of my late brother, Collin. Through your support, together we were able to contribute to a cause that remains deeply personal to me.
Choosing September 11, 2026, as my closing date is also intentional. It marks not only the twelfth anniversary of Emerald Leather Company, but also the anniversary of Collin's passing. While he is deeply missed, I know he would not want me to spend too long agonizing over this decision. Instead, I believe he would encourage me to be grateful for the years this business provided, for the people I met along the way, and for the opportunity it gave me to make a small difference in his memory. It feels like the right time to close this chapter and move forward.
To everyone who placed an order, trusted me with a family heirloom, recommended my work, or simply encouraged this small business along the way—thank you. Your confidence in my craftsmanship made this dream possible.
Although Emerald Leather Company is coming to an end, I hope the values it was built upon endure: quality over convenience, preservation over disposal, and respect for the traditions of leatherworking that have been passed down through generations.
Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your stories.
With sincere gratitude,
Kelsey Riser

OUR STORY
Nestled in the pristine Northwest of the United States, Emerald Leather is dedicated to bringing you exceptional craftsmanship and unparalleled care for your cherished leather goods. We specialize in cleaning, restoring, and creating exquisite handmade items with the utmost respect for tradition and quality. At Emerald Leather, we use only the finest materials, including premium vegetable-tanned and chrome-tanned leathers, and we never compromise by using leather substitutes.
Emerald Leather Company was founded by artisan Kelsey Riser, a seasoned leatherworker with a deep appreciation for the artistry of classical leather craft. After honing her skills at a saddle shop and serving as the lead designer for a motorcycle bag studio, Kelsey decided to forge her own path. Combining her years of hands-on experience with a passion for preserving leatherworking traditions, she established Emerald Leather as a haven for those who value timeless craftsmanship.
Growing up on a golf course with her siblings, Kelsey’s entrepreneurial spirit was sparked by a creative venture: hunting for lost golf balls at night, meticulously cleaning them, and selling them back to golfers the next morning. But it wasn’t just about selling golf balls; Kelsey and her brothers took the time to learn about the different brands and grades, ensuring they could price them appropriately and offer their customers a fair deal. This early experience not only taught her the value of hard work and attention to detail but also fostered a deep curiosity for understanding the materials she worked with—a trait that carries into her leather craft today.
Just as she once transformed discarded golf balls into something valuable, Kelsey now channels that same dedication to quality and expertise into her leatherwork, selecting the finest materials and delivering exceptional craftsmanship for every project.
“It was an incredible journey that helped me master a wide range of skills,” Kelsey recalls about her early career. “From designing products to teaching tooling techniques to leather workers, both new and seasoned, I gained a profound understanding of leather’s versatility. I even had the joy of teaching a blind student whose determination and humor made every challenge worthwhile. It was an honor to share the craft with such inspiring individuals.”
Trained in quintessential Western leatherworking, Kelsey developed a unique style rooted in hand-tooled details and heavy-duty craftsmanship. Her time at the saddle shop instilled a love for the rugged durability of traditional methods, while her experience designing motorcycle bags exposed her to modern techniques. Yet, it also deepened her appreciation for the sturdier, more robust applications she truly enjoys.
“I’ve realized my heart lies in the timeless craftsmanship of Western-style leatherwork.”

“While modern techniques have their place, I’ve realized my heart lies in the timeless craftsmanship of Western-style leatherwork,” Kelsey shares. “I love creating custom, hand-tooled pieces—especially old-school Western gun holsters. There’s something deeply satisfying about bringing a client’s vision to life in a way that honors tradition while making the piece uniquely theirs.”
In addition to her hands-on experience in leatherworking, Kelsey spent years in the leather sales industry, which gave her an insider’s perspective on the trade. She became an expert in the weights, grades, and types of leather and developed a meticulous eye for selecting the best materials. This knowledge not only enriches her craft but also ensures that every product or restoration meets the highest standards.
At Emerald Leather, we specialize in serving clients who appreciate the irreplaceable value of their leather items. Whether restoring sentimental heirlooms, cleaning and conditioning vintage pieces, or creating bespoke commissions, Kelsey approaches each project with care, respect, and dedication.
Every piece of leather tells a story, and Kelsey’s mission is to honor and preserve those stories. By combining the best materials, time-honored techniques, and a passion for craftsmanship, Emerald Leather offers more than just a product or service—we offer a connection to a legacy.
We invite you to share your vision with us, whether it’s a custom commission or the restoration of a treasured item. At Emerald Leather, your ideas inspire us, and your satisfaction drives us. Let us help you write the next chapter in your leather’s story.
MISSION STATEMENT
At Emerald Leather, our purpose goes beyond creating exceptional leather goods and offering premium services. We are deeply committed to honoring the memory of Kelsey’s younger brother, Collin, a kind, intelligent, and compassionate soul whose life was tragically cut short due to chronic daily cluster migraines.
Collin described himself as "just someone with a dream." Though he never shared what that dream was, his empathy and humor left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. In his honor, Emerald Leather donates 10% of every purchase (pre-tax) to the American Migraine Foundation. We hope to contribute to advancements in migraine research and therapies, preventing others from enduring the pain Collin faced and helping improve the lives of those suffering from chronic pain.
Emerald Leather is not just a business; it’s a tribute to Collin’s legacy. Just as Kelsey’s early entrepreneurial endeavors with her brothers inspired her journey into leather craft, Collin’s memory inspires Emerald Leather’s greater mission: to bring compassion, purpose, and positive change into the world.
